After sunset, the Commander of the Faithful Ameer ul Momineen (Alihissalam) went along with Lady Fatima (Alihassalam), Imam Hasan (Alihissalam), and Imam Husayn (Alihissalam) to the homes of the Muhajirun and Ansar. He presented his rightful claim to the caliphate and invited them to support him. Lady Fatima spoke to the women, while Imam Ali (Alihissalam) addressed the men and called them to assist him in his rightful cause.

Forty-four men accepted this invitation. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) instructed them to come early in the morning with their heads shaved, armed, and prepared to pledge allegiance even unto death. However, the next morning, only four individuals showed up. Salman al-Farsi said these four were Abu Dharr, Miqdad, himself (Salman), and Zubayr ibn al-Awwam.

On the following night, the Commander of the Faithful, Ameer ul Momineen (Alihissalam) once again visited the people and invited them to support his rightful leadership. Once more, they made promises, but again, the next morning, no one except those same four came. Witnessing their deception and betrayal, Imam Ali (Alihissalam) withdrew to his home.

He then devoted himself to compiling and arranging the Holy Qur’an. During those days, the Qur’an existed in scattered forms—written on paper, wooden planks, pieces of leather, and cloth. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) did not leave his home until he had completed gathering the entire Qur’an. He wrote with his own hand not only the verses but also their order of revelation, interpretation, and the abrogating and abrogated verses.
